About LST/TC 17 "Mediena" ("Wood")

Areas of standardization

The areas of standardization of LST/TC 17 are:

• forestry (silvics, forest genetics and tree breeding, forest regeneration and afforestation, forest management, forest economy, harvesting);
• timber (round and sawn timber, structural timber);
• wood-based panels (plywood, fibreboards, particleboards, test methods);
• wood preservatives;
• technologies of timber processing.

There are 4 subcommittees in LST/TC 17:

The Members of LST/TC 17 "Mediena"

LST/TC 17 is a member of Lithuanian Standards Board. It is a voluntary association of organizations representing economic and social interests. There are 54 members in LST/TC 17:

• 24 forest enterprises;
• 12 wood processing enterprises;
• 6 universities, colleges and institutes (Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuanian University of Agriculture, Forest Inventory and Management Institute, Lithuanian Forest Research Institute, Kaunas College of Forestry and Environmental Engineering, Kaunas College);
• 12 associations and other members (association "Lietuvos mediena"; Lithuanian Department of Forests under the Ministry of Environment; State non Food Products Inspectorate under the Ministry of Economy, Certification Centre of Building Products).

Relations with CEN/TC's

LST/TC 17 deals with standards prepared by CEN/TCs:

• CEN/TC 38 "Durability of wood and wood-based products";
• CEN/TC 112 "Wood-based panels";
• CEN/TC 124 "Timber structures";
• CEN/TC 175 "Round and sawn timber".

In 1998 LST/TC 17 started cooperation with CEN/TC 124 "Timber structures", CEN/TC 175 "Round and sawn timber" and the Technical Centre for Wood and Furniture (CTBA, France). In 1999 LST/TC 17 entered into relations with CEN/TC 112 "Wood-based panels".

LST/TC 17 get methodical help from secretary of CEN/TC 175 - Ms. C. Cottenet, secretary of CEN/TC 112 Mr. B. Trepkau, the Technical Centre for Wood and Furniture - Mr. A. Demange and financial help from PRAQ III FAST coordinator Ms. S. Vaccaro.

LST/TC 17 participated in the meetings of CEN/TC's (as an observer member in 1998-2003, as a member since 2004):

Rules

Information bulletin. One of the main principles of the Lithuanian standardization system is publicity. The information bulletin "Forest. Timber. Technologies. Standardization" put this principle into practice. The bulletin is published by Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuanian University of Agriculture and LST/TC 17 "Mediena". The bulletin presents and analyses the draft and adopted standards, the problems of standardization. In 1998–2010 50 issues were published (4 issues per year).

Dictionary. In 1998 definitive dictionary of forestry, timber, wood processing, wood-based panels, timber articles, furniture and etc. was published. The dictionary contains 2000 terms (in Lithuanian–Russian–German–English) and their definitions (in Lithuanian).
